How to Ship Perishables: Expert Tips for Perfect Deliveries
The holidays are almost here, and when they roll around, we tend to see an uptick in ship perishable items—meats, fruits, and of course chocolate. If you’re sending perishable goods for your business, we understand how important it is to get them where they’re going in perfect condition.
Shipping Cold Foods
For foods like cheese and fruit we recommend using a coolant, like a frozen gel ice pack.
Traditionally, perishable cold items are packed in Styrofoam containers. But here at TSS we don’t want shipping cold items to mean adding to the trash, that’s why we created Renewliner, the world’s first recyclable insulated shipping system. Made from recycled water bottles and lighter than Styrofoam, Renewliner will get your goods where they’re going safely and without ending up in a landfill.
Make sure your package is clearly marked “Perishable – Keep Refrigerated” so your recipient is aware they need to refrigerate or freeze the food as soon as possible.
Shipping Frozen Foods
While shipping frozen foods can be tricky, at TSS we have a shipping solution for that.
First, be sure your item is completely frozen before packing, and use a watertight liner on the inside of your package if the item can melt or thaw. For frozen items it is usually best to pack them in dry ice, though keep in mind dry ice is hazardous and requires gloves and goggles to handle. Your goods should be sealed in a plastic bag when using dry ice. Label your package thoroughly so the recipient knows the contents are packed in dry ice.
For quick frozen shipments (less than 48 hours) we recommend our DuraShield Box Liner. Perfect for overnighting a frozen treat, leak proof, and optimal for any season!
Shipping Chocolate
With Halloween on the horizon being able to ship chocolate and other goodies without melting or blooming will be key for many businesses and diligent trick or treaters.
When chocolate is subjected to improper temperature and moisture fluctuations it causes white patches known as blooming. Blooming can deteriorate the taste and texture.
Fat blooming is when the chocolate has melted and rehardened. While sugar blooming occurs when the temperature of the chocolate drops too quickly and the chocolate is exposed to moisture.
To prevent blooming and keep your chocolate in perfect condition, it’s important the temperature of the chocolate remains consistent throughout shipment. For sending chocolate we like shipping in a Renewliner for its superior temperature control and lowered carbon footprint.
No matter your cold shipping needs, TSS has the solution for you. Reach out and check out our products to learn more about getting your perishable goods where they need to be.
